The Roblox Font: What It Is and How to Style Your Text

The word Roblox rendered in bold sans, small capitals and fraktur Unicode styles

โ€œRoblox fontโ€ is really three different questions wearing one search box, and the answer to each is different. Some people want the typeface Roblox itself uses, to match it in a thumbnail or a logo. Some want the old Roblox font, the one from before the 2022 redesign. And most want styled letters in their display name or their chat โ€” which is not a font question at all.

This piece answers all three, and is honest about which of them has a clean answer.

What font does Roblox use?

The Roblox interface has used two typefaces in living memory. For most of the 2010s it ran on Source Sans Pro, Adobeโ€™s open-source sans-serif, which is free to download and use from the Source Sans repository. With the 2022 brand refresh Roblox moved its interface and wordmark to a custom typeface of its own, Builder Sans, which is not distributed for public download.

In practice this means:

The old Roblox font

โ€œOld Roblox fontโ€ almost always means Source Sans Pro, which was the interface font through the era most people are nostalgic for. It is free, it installs on any machine, and it is the correct file to use if you are rebuilding a 2015-style thumbnail or a classic-looking logo. The older 2006-era wordmark was custom lettering rather than a released typeface, so there is no file for it โ€” that one gets traced, not downloaded.

Can you change the Roblox font in-game?

No, and it is worth being direct about it. Roblox does not expose a font setting to players. The only ways to change what the client renders involve replacing files inside the installation directory, which breaks on every update, and which Robloxโ€™s Terms of Use treat as modifying the client. We do not walk anyone through that.

What you can change is the characters you type. That is the rest of this page.

Roblox font generator: styled names with Unicode

Roblox does not run markdown, and there is no formatting toolbar. But every text field it has accepts Unicode, and Unicode contains whole alphabets of pre-styled letters โ€” not styling applied to an A, but a separate character that happens to be shaped like a bold A. They came from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, encoded so that formulas could distinguish ๐€ from ๐”„ from ๐”ธ.

Because they are characters rather than formatting, they paste into a display name the same way ordinary letters do.

Paste any of those into the font generator and it will show you your own name instead of ours. The bold text generator and bubble text generator cover individual styles in more depth.

Why Roblox rejects most styled display names

Here is the part that other pages leave out, and the reason a lot of people conclude a generator is โ€œbrokenโ€.

Roblox filters text harder than almost any platform of its size, because most of its users are children. Display names, usernames, chat messages and in-experience text all pass through that filter, and it is conservative about characters it does not recognise. In practice:

So the honest expectation is this: styled text usually works in places you control inside an experience you built, sometimes works in a display name, and reliably does not work in a username. If a name is rejected, it is the filter, not the characters being invalid.

Roblox describes the system in its own article on text filtering, and developers get the same filter through the TextService API.

Styled text for thumbnails and group descriptions

Where Unicode styling actually pays off on Roblox is the text you place rather than the text you type into a filtered field:

For a thumbnail, do not use Unicode at all. Use a real font file in a real image editor: it will be sharper, you can control the weight and spacing, and it will never turn into a row of empty boxes on someone elseโ€™s device.

Quick answers

What is the Roblox font called?
The current one is Builder Sans, a custom typeface Roblox does not distribute. The long-running earlier one was Source Sans Pro, which is free.

Can I download the Roblox font?
Source Sans Pro, yes, from Adobeโ€™s repository. Builder Sans, no.

How do I change my Roblox font?
You cannot change the interface font. You can change the characters in your display name, which is what a Roblox font generator does.

Why does my styled name get rejected?
Robloxโ€™s text filter blocks it. That is a platform rule, not a problem with the characters.

Do these work on mobile and Xbox?
They depend on the fonts installed on the device doing the reading. Missing characters show as empty rectangles โ€” why Unicode fonts break covers the cause.
