How to Bold Text on Facebook: Posts, Bios and Comments

Facebook has no bold button in a post, a comment, a bio or a page description. There is no markdown, no keyboard shortcut, and no setting. Asterisks around a word stay asterisks.
What people mean by โbold text on Facebookโ is therefore always the same thing: pasting characters that are shaped like bold letters. It works everywhere Facebook accepts text, and it has costs. Both are below.
How bold text on Facebook works
Unicode, the character standard behind essentially all digital text, has a block called Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols. It was encoded because a formula needs ๐, ๐ and ๐ธ to be three distinct symbols, so each was given its own code point. The by-product is a full bold alphabet, a full italic alphabet and several more โ as characters, not as formatting.
Facebook stores the characters you paste. It does not know they look bold, which is exactly why they work in fields with no formatting controls.
| Style | Example | What it is |
|---|---|---|
Run your own words through the bold text generator and copy the result.
Where it works on Facebook
| Field | Works? |
|---|---|
| Post | Yes |
| Comment | Yes |
| Reply | Yes |
| Bio / Intro | Yes |
| Page description | Yes |
| Group description | Yes |
| Event description | Yes |
| Your name | No โ Facebookโs real-name policy rejects them |
| Marketplace listing | Yes, but see below |
Your name is the exception that surprises people. Facebook validates profile names against an allow-list of characters and rejects the mathematical block outright. This is deliberate and not worth fighting: it is part of how the platform enforces its authentic-name rule.
The three costs
Facebook search stops finding styled words
Facebookโs search matches characters. A page whose description says ๐ฃ๐น๐๐บ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ฟ does not contain the word โplumberโ as far as search is concerned. For a business page this is the expensive one โ style a heading if you like, but every word you want to be found by must also appear in plain letters somewhere.
Screen readers and bold Facebook text
Assistive software announcing ๐ข๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ป may say โmathematical sans-serif bold capital O, mathematical sans-serif bold small pโ one character at a time, or skip the run. The Unicode Consortium states directly that these characters are for mathematical notation and not a substitute for rich text.
Not every device draws the characters
Characters render only if the readerโs device has a font covering them. Recent phones and desktops handle this block well; older Android builds, some TVs and some e-readers do not, and show empty rectangles. Why Unicode fonts break explains the mechanism.
Using it without the costs
The rule that resolves most of it: style for emphasis, never for information.
A workable pattern for a business post:
๐ก๐ฒ๐ ๐ผ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ป๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ต๐ผ๐๐ฟ๐ ๐ณ๐ฟ๐ผ๐บ ๐ ๐ผ๐ป๐ฑ๐ฎ๐
We are now open 08:00โ18:00 Monday to Friday

Bakery, Oak Street, Dundee. Phone 01382 000000.
One styled heading. Every fact โ the hours, the trade, the street, the phone number โ in plain characters, so search finds it and a screen reader reads it.
Other things that emphasise without any of the costs:
- Line breaks. A short paragraph reads as emphatic all by itself.
- A leading symbol.
โorโขorโat the start of a line draws the eye and is read aloud correctly. - CAPITALS, sparingly. Plain, searchable and unmistakable.
- An image. For a headline that has to look designed, set it in a real typeface in an image. It will be sharper and it will never fail to render.
What about Facebook Marketplace and ads
Two places to be more careful.
Marketplace listings are found almost entirely through search. A styled title is a listing nobody sees. Keep titles and item descriptions in plain letters.
Paid ads go through Facebookโs ad review. Heavy use of unusual characters is one of the patterns reviewers and automated systems associate with policy evasion, and styled text is also poorly handled by the automated text-in-image and readability checks. For anything you are paying to distribute, plain text is the safer choice.
Quick answers
Can I bold text in a Facebook comment?
Yes, by pasting bold Unicode characters. There is no button.
Why does **text** not work?
Facebook does not support markdown anywhere.
Why is my bold name rejected?
Facebook restricts profile names to a standard character set as part of its name policy.
Does bold text reduce my reach?
There is no evidence of a penalty, but styled words are not indexed as those words, so styled text simply does not get matched by searches.
Does it work in Messenger?
Yes, in the message body. Messenger also has its own *bold* and _italic_ formatting in recent versions, which is real formatting and better in every way โ use that where it is available.

- Bold text generator โ every bold alphabet, applied to your text
- Italic text generator โ the italic ones
- All font styles โ the full set
- Unicode blocks reference โ where these characters come from
